By the time Ravilious painted Belle Tout, the lighthouse had been converted into a private house, its original purpose made redundant by the new lighthouse below the cliffs. Ravilious seems to play with this reversal of function: the lighthouse has become a house for light. Rather than looking towards it from outside, we are invited to look from within, towards the new lighthouse beyond. Bathed in refracted light, the scene reveals the vivid green of the promontory, the stark whiteness of the cliffs, and, in the distance, a shimmering sea filled with light.
