Vale of the white horse – Watercolour, 1939

This is the White Horse of Uffington in the Berkshire Downs, dated to the Bronze Age, circa 1000 BC. Rain falls from a luminous sky onto contours sculpted by time and strong with the colours of the land: brown, grey, green and white. The White Horse has had an impact on various cultural forms, from Henry Moore’s sculpture to Paul Nash’s photography; from Chesterton’s poetry to the literature of Thomas Hughes (of Tom Brown’s Schooldays fame). And in more recent times its influence can be found in the music of Kate Bush, XTC and Nirvana.
