Watercolour on paper, 1938. Ravilious was good
friends with John Nash (see Nash Biography and Prints) and together the
two went on painting excursions, to Essex and the surrounding
countryside; around Nash’s Buckinghamshire home, and also, at Nash’s
suggestion, to Bristol. Here both artists painted and sketched the
paddle steamers operated by P&A Campbell in the summer, but moored
for the winter in Bristol. The Paddle Steamer ‘Britannia’ (which
Ravilious misspells here as ‘Brittania’) worked the route from the Devon
port of Ilfracombe to Weston-super-Mare and still holds the Bristol
Channel speed record of 1 hour 56 minutes for a journey by paddle
steamer between these ports.
