Linocut c.1929 printed in four colours: red, yellow, and two shades of blue, this is recognized as one of the Grosvenor School’s signature prints, and Flight’s masterpiece. The image depicts three racing cars thundering around the legendary Brooklands race track. Brooklands was founded in 1906, and at the time of this depiction – c. 1920 – attendance at the track was at its height. But the image is seminal, too, because it illustrates in both its content and its methods of depiction so much that is characteristic of the Grosvenor School: the concern with movement and with speed; the curving carved lines of the cuts; and the sheer vibrancy of the colours.
