A young mother traverses an undulating pavement. On her left are lorries, bumper to bumper. She is careful of her cargo – sheltered as it is by the pram’s umbrella. Shephard was recognized for an intimacy and a delicacy of portrayal, and the colours in this linocut speak of this intimacy: soft browns and delicate blues are repeated in the mother’s attire, in the buildings along the street, and again in the lorries which rumble by. A rather beautiful portrayal.
