Originally this exquisite lithograph was created
to illustrate a classic of rural literature, ‘Men and the Fields’, by
Adrian Bell. Of ‘Men and the Fields’ another great man of letters and
literary portraitist of the rural, Ronald Blythe, writes: ‘The unique
talents of both Bell and Nash for presenting the “now” – that particular
threshing week, that actual market day, those snows or rains’ make this
a ‘beautiful liaison of text and illustration’. In this print the banks
of the river Stour are burgeoning, its flanks golden with corn, and the
river willows, long unpollarded, have grown luxuriant in the summer
sun.
