Wood Engraving (1933). Original size 21.5 x
25.6cm. Of this scene Leighton writes: ‘Through the sleepy glow of the
October afternoon the two old men in the cider barn trudge round and
round, grunting to each other from time to time. The sun has now swung
over to the far end of the cider press and catches new forms and
objects, leaving in shadow the cider barrels that earlier in the day it
has emblazoned. A cat emerges from the shade, lazily stretches
herself, and takes her seat in the path of the sun. Nothing else has
changed’.
