The Word’s End is an area of Chelsea, London, famous for its street life (most lively, perhaps, in the sixties). And here we have a street stall selling fruit, with bunches of bananas on hooks, lemons and other citrus – not discernibly drawn but recognisable nonetheless. And London characters: the chic lady with dog; the mother with pram; the workman, the housewives and of course the market stall salesman. But it is the colours depicting the vibrancy of market life which make this such an attractive market scene.
