Woodcut (1926). This was acquired by the Detroit
Institute of Arts in 1919 – the first of Lazzell’s prints to be
purchased by a public collection. It was chosen as amongst the best
works in the first American exhibition of woodcuts – Wood Block Prints
in Color – held in the same year at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The
Institute bought the print for just $20.00 *, from which a 33.3%
commission of $6.66 went to Lazzell. But the acquisition set Lazzell on
the trajectory towards the kind of public recognition and esteem in
which she is now held.
*Approximately $260.00 in today’s money, with $68.59 going to
Lazzell. But prices for Lazzell’s white line prints can now achieve
upwards of $150,000 – approximately £95,000
