Watercolour, 1936. Cycling through Falcon Square, Castle Hedingham, Essex, the glassy surface reflecting light from an English sky. It is easy to imagine the sound of tyre on watery tarmac as you make your way through this English village. And Ravilious would have known this sound as he and his compatriots cycled everywhere. This is a captured moment – very 1930’s, when most people would have owned a bicycle as their one main means of transport.
