Oil on canvas. Flax is another name for linseed. It is one of the oldest of cultivars. Sometimes known as the ‘fibre of civilisation’ because of its many uses. Its seeds are made into linseed oil and its fibres into linen. But whilst Spencer may have these uses in mind, he here celebrates the delicate beauty of the plant, its luminescent properties contrasting with the bright red of the field poppies; its undulating covering of the entire enchanting field.
