Title: “Leaving Scapa Flow” by Eric Ravilious

In this poignant piece, Ravilious captures a moment of solitude and vastness. The watercolour, printed to its original size, transports us to the tumultuous times of World War II. Ravilious, serving as the Official War Artist aboard the H.M.S. Highlander, found inspiration amidst the naval drama.

The scene unfolds over Scapa Flow—a place steeped in history, where naval vessels once anchored and battles were waged. But here, it’s departure that takes center stage. A lone mariner stands on the deck, gazing out into the expanse of sky and sea. The blues and browns blend seamlessly, mirroring the melancholy of war and separation.

Yet, there’s beauty in this desolation. The flecked spray dances at the icy tops of waves, a delicate reminder of resilience. Perhaps it’s the very vastness that amplifies the mariner’s solitude—a poignant reminder of sacrifice and duty.

And so, we stand with Ravilious on that deck, feeling the weight of history and the pull of the horizon. It’s more than a painting; it’s a whispered farewell—a tribute to those who sailed into uncertainty.
