This rare and quintessential work captures Eric Ravilious’s deep affection for the landscape of the South Downs. His biographer, Helen Binyon, frequently accompanied him on his painting trips and described the sense of freedom and belonging he found in these landscapes.

She recalled how “the spaciousness and breadth of views of land and of skies excited him”, adding that he felt he had “come to his own country”, despite never having visited this particular stretch of the Downs before, with Mount Caburn to the north and Firle Beacon to the east.

The sweeping views, expansive skies and quiet sense of place make this a particularly evocative example of Ravilious’s work and a fine expression of his enduring connection with the Sussex landscape.
