Woodcut (1933). This print is very much
recognized as amongst Lazzell’s most admired and accomplished. And, more
than in some other of her works, the texture of the wood can here be
clearly discerned. Lazzell plays with this: she uses French watercolour
pigments, and by rubbing the sheet of paper against the painted block
the grain of the wood is retained – the striated pattern echoing the
shape of the waves at the edge of the water.
