Photograph (1978).
Ravilious manages to capture
the ordinary moment, yet there is nothing commonplace or dull in his
photographs. Ravilious instinctively knows that when people are in front
of a camera they can tend towards the posed. But such was the trust he
inspired in the people he photographed that his subjects find no need
for preparation or preening. The moment captured is never overly
prepared or arranged, cliché is avoided, and the ‘ordinariness’ becomes
something more – the exploration of a unique instant.
