‘Cane Chair’ (1954). Screenprint. There’s an interesting juxtaposition of figurative with more abstract elements in this print: the chair can be discerned first as one object, but it is as if elements of the chair and the cane composing it, have been used again to ‘frame’ the work, giving it larger dimensions, but also catching the qualities – aerial, transparent, light, etc. of the chair and its architecture. Speaking as it does of a domestic object, the print makes a very attractive art work for the wall – and the colours are bold, engaging and winsome too.
