Originally this exquisite lithograph was created
to illustrate a classic of rural literature, ‘Men and the Fields’, by
Adrian Bell. Of ‘Men and the Fields’ another great man of letters and
literary portraitist of the rural, Ronald Blythe, writes: ‘The unique
talents of both Bell and Nash for presenting the “now” – that particular
threshing week, that actual market day, those snows or rains’ make this
a ‘beautiful liaison of text and illustration’. It is mid-day in this
print; the shadows are short, and both farmer and thresher require
shelter and rest from the heat of the sun.
