“Nash’s Enigmatic Scene: A Gatepost and Moonlight”
In Nash’s own words, this painting features “the pale stone sphere atop the ruined pillar facing its counterpart—the moon—cold, pale, and solid as stone. No legend or history attaches to such a picture; its drama is inherent in the scene.” However, the reality behind this artwork is more grounded: it depicts a gatepost and a long avenue of trees. These elements were once part of the grand entrance to the Dormer family’s house at Ascot Park, near the Oxfordshire village of Stadhampton. Tragically, the house burned down, and subsequent attempts to rebuild it faltered due to financial constraints. So, while Nash claims there is “no legend or history,” the inherent drama remains—a testament to lost grandeur and the passage of time.
