The Orchard By Keith Vaughan
Gouache, crayon, pen and ink (1944). This is a closely observed portrayal of trees in a small orchard, with golden apples, a brimming basket and two figures – a skirted woman and a small child, and a farmhouse in the background with an open welcoming door. And the colours and shapes, tending towards the abstract, are here also reminiscent of Graham Sutherland’s work. This is an inviting pastoral scene.
