Gouache on paper (1958). Yates the architect was often interested in the sculpture of roof tops. Indeed, on what may be said to be two of Ryder and Yates’s most famous buildings – Norgas House and the Engineering Research Station, both at Killingworth – rooftop sculpture abounds. Here we have chimneys and cupolas; church spires and funnels; cranes and ventilation pipes; water tanks and towers. And with its ‘Shop at Binns’ this is many people’s favourite Yates.
