Windmill By Eric Ravilious
Windmill (1935). Watercolour and pencil. Ravilious is often fascinated by the working landscape – the worker not being referenced directly, but rather through the tools and implements with which he works (see ‘Waterwheel’; ‘Chalk Paths’, etc.). The shapes perfectly portray those of the Downs; the sky over the English Channel in the background a hovering complement to the shadows and undulations of the fields in the foreground.
