Watercolour on paper, 1938. Even more so than
other of Ravilious’s coastal paintings, ‘Rye Harbour’ captures the
clarity of early morning seaside light. A rising sun is reflected in the
water below; harbour walls stretch towards an invisible horizon, and a
clarity of vision is afforded, so much so that the eye can pick out such
details as the wires stretching towards the far off shore.
