Originally this exquisite lithograph was created to illustrate a classic of rural literature, ‘Men and the Fields’, by Adrian Bell. Of ‘Men and the Fields’ another great man of letters and literary portraitist of the rural, Ronald Blythe, writes: ‘The unique talents of both Bell and Nash for presenting the “now” – that particular threshing week, that actual market day, those snows or rains’ make this a ‘beautiful liaison of text and illustration’. The ‘now’ of this print is Spring and its nascent promise of the crop to come. Here the farmer prepares the ground, and the new buds on the trees are almost ready to burgeon into the fullness of their leaf.
